“Count Dracula had directed me to go to the Golden Krone Hotel,
which I found, to my great delight, to be thoroughly old-fashioned,
for of course I wanted to see all I could of the ways of the country.
~ bram stoker
“imagination is the beginning of creation.
you imagine what you desire,
you will what you imagine and at last,
you create what you will.”
– george bernard shaw

“don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.” ~ rumi

“there is a vitality, a life force, an energy,
a quickening that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you in all time,
this expression is unique. And if you block it,
it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”
~ martha graham

“Creativity is more about taking the facts, fictions, and feelings we store away and finding new ways to connect them.
What we’re talking about here is metaphor. Metaphor is the lifeblood of all art, if it is not art itself.
Metaphor is our vocabulary for connecting what we are experiencing now with what we have experienced before.
It’s not only how we express what we remember , it’s how we interpret it – for ourselves and others.”
~ twyla tharp

“if a million people see my movie,
i hope they see a million different movies.”
~ quentin tarantino
“my movie is born first in my head, dies on paper, is resuscitated by the living persons and real objects i use,
which are killed on film but, placed in a certain order and projected on to a screen,
come to life again like flowers in water.” ~ robert bresson

“nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination.
devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture,
bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul.
if you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent.
and don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it.
in any case, always remember what jean-luc godard said:
“it’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”
~ jim jarmusch

If you make your way to Sacramento, which I highly recommend
~ here are some of my favorite places I’ve either been to or want to go to since I’ve eaten their food, drank their wine…
RUHSTALLER / a very cool beer hall and space / where we had lunch during prep days
MAGPIE CAFE / owner Ed Roehr, who learned some of his craft in Venice at Paradiso Perduto (a fave there) made us the most delicious of food
LowBrau / pics of sliders above. My friend Clay Nutting’s place, fabulous for lunch or dinner (3 min drive from ArtHotel, on the Grid)
BLOCK BUTCHER BAR / attached to LowBrau, this play is gorgeous and the food is delicious (and fab cocktails). Where we went after the preview.
REVOLUTION WINES / Craig Haarmeyer’s wine tasting place where you can also get bites to eat. Right next door to Temple Coffee…
TEMPLE COFFEE / there are a few of these in Sac, but the one i went to on S Street was next door to Rev Wines and had a lot of space to hang.
AND if you just want a quick “walking slice” of pizza, I went to 8th Street pizza (918 8 th street), at J. The owner was super sweet, the pizza simple, good.

“You know the greatest thing is passion, without it what have you got?
I mean if you love someone you can love them as much as you can love them but if it isn’t a passion,
it isn’t burning, it isn’t on fire, you haven’t lived.”
~ diana vreeland
